UPF 50+ is a rating for fabric, not for lotion. The weave lets through less than a fiftieth of the ultraviolet that reaches it, which is over 98% of UVA and UVB stopped on the skin underneath.
That protection is built into the yarn while it is knitted and dyed, so there is nothing sitting on the surface to sweat off or rinse away in salt water. The piece is rated the same at four in the afternoon as it was when you put it on.

The knit stretches in four directions and returns, so the fabric follows your shoulder through a stroke instead of pulling against it. Flat seams sit level with the surface, which is what keeps a long session from ending with a raw patch under the arm.
It goes into the water wet and leaves your back dry. Covered skin also runs cooler than bare skin in direct sun, because the fabric takes the heat instead of your shoulders.
